A US court has rejected a petition by popular singer Britney Spears seeking the removal of her father from custody of her property.
The 7-year-old singer’s father, Jamie Spears, was given legal guardianship five years ago due to her mental health concerns.
Ms Spears’ lawyer says her client is “afraid of her father” and that if she stays in her current role, she will no longer sing.
But the father’s lawyer says again, he has always done useful work for his daughter.
A judge said he would consider a petition in the future to remove him from custody.
At the same time, at Ms. Spears’ request, the financial company Bessemer Trust has been given the role of co-custodian.
Ms Spears’ lawyer, Samuel Ingham, told the court on Tuesday that her client did not have a “proper working partnership” with her father and had not spoken to each other for “a long time.”
On the other hand, Jimmy Spears’ lawyer, Vivian Thohren, said Ms. Spears did not speak to her father because she had been advised by her lawyer.
The lawsuit alleges that a group of Ms. Spears’ supporters launched a campaign called “Independent Britney” and accused her of holding her father and others captive.
According to a court ruling, Britney Spears has not been able to make a decision on her financial affairs and most of her activities for three years.
The decision-making power of some mental patients is usually given to a caregiver.
For the past seven years, Britney Spears’ father and lawyer have had the power to make decisions about her wealth, personal life and even seeing doctors or private guests for treatment.
The famous music star’s behavior has been disrupted since she divorced Kevin Federlin in 2002 and lost the right to raise two children.
